This 1967 American mystery drama film, directed by Norman Jewison, tells the story of Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), a black police detective from Philadelphia, who becomes involved in a murder investigation in Sparta, a small town in Mississippi. Following the murder, Tibbs is arrested as a suspect at the Sparta train station. At the police station, he is presented to the racist Police Chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger), who jumps to the conclusion that he has his culprit (attempting to "flee" Sparta, via a train depot that is closed). But he is embarrassed to learn that Wood has arrested a Philadelphia detective. The film won five Academy Awards, including the 1967 awards for Best Picture and Rod Steiger for Best Actor.

David Lynch's prequel to his cult television series Twin Peaks concerns the last seven days in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), whose plastic-wrapped corpse, found floating in a river, was the fulcrum for the television series. During the day, Laura is a top honors student. By night, she is a sex-crazed cokehead, prostituting herself at a sleazy sex club. Her race to oblivion is fueled by her father, Leland (Ray Wise), who, as his alter ego Bob (Frank Silva), has been sexually abusing Laura since she was a child. Leland discovers Laura's nocturnal debauchery when, during a business trip, he is set up with his own daughter for a sexual tryst. In a fit of jealous rage, Leland follows Laura as she travels to a sex party in an abandoned railroad car. Consumed by insatiable longing, Leland transforms himself into Bob, with tragic results for Laura and her friends.

This 1989 American biographical film was directed by Jim McBride. Dennis Quaid stars as rockabilly pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis. Based on a biography by Myra Lewis and Murray M. Silver, Jr., the screenplay is written by McBride and Jack Baran. The early career of Jerry Lee Lewis, from his rise to rock and roll stardom to his controversial marriage to his 13-year-old cousin that led to his downfall, is depicted in the film. Until the scandal of the marriage depreciated his image, many had thought Lewis would supplant Elvis Presley as the "King of Rock and Roll" in the 1950s.

Catch a Fire is a 2006 biographical thriller film about activists against apartheid in South Africa. Directed by Phillip Noyce, the film revolves around Patrick Chamusso (Derek Luke), a young, apolitical man who is accused of carrying out an attack against the government, and an Afrikaner police officer, Nic Vos (Tim Robbins). Patrick is unwillingly swept into Vos's investigation of the attack due to his inability to provide a satisfactory explanation for his whereabouts at the time. Eventually Patrick, his wife, Precious (Bonnie Henna), and his family are tortured and savagely abused by Vos and Vos's subordinates. Desperate, Patrick says that he is willing to confess to a crime he did not commit to protect his family from torture.

This 2002 British-Irish-American disaster fantasy film, directed by Rob Bowman, is set in a post-apocalyptic England in the year 2020; twenty years after London tunneling project workers inadvertently reawake dragons from centuries of slumber and the creatures have subsequently replaced humans as the dominant species on Earth. With the fate of mankind at stake, two surviving parties, led by Quinn Abercromby (Christian Bale) and Denton Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), find that they must overcome their differences and work together to hunt down and destroy the beasts in a desperate attempt to take back the world.
