Spoken word is the subject of growing interest among young people worldwide. As part of its WordSpeak spoken word project, Tigertail is offering four free workshops and a slam for South Florida teens from 13 to 19 years old. Tigertail has launched the All City Slam to assist Miami Dade students in the development of their writing and performance skills. Because Tigertail WordSpeak has been a project primarily involving specific area high schools, this event will provide more teens with a WordSpeak experience. All City Slam Schedule of Events: Four dynamic poets, writers and directors – Alexis Caputo, Teo Castellanos, Rudi Goblen and Deborah Magdalena – will give hour-long workshops. Teo Castellanos and Deborah Magdalena will co-host the slam. Cash prizes ($100 for first, $75 for second and $25 for third) will go to the top three slam winners. There is no need to pre-register for the workshops or slam. Teens may just show up and register on site. They may participate in the workshops, the slam, or both. All area teens from age 13 and 19 are invited to participate in the workshops and the slam. Persons of all ages are invited to participate as audience members. Alexis Caputo is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, writer, dancer, teacher and journalist known for work based on cultural, human rights and social issues. She is the author of AFRO Diaries (2012), a multidisciplinary, multicultural, inter-generational and international project. Alexis studied language and culture at the University of Paris and is an honors scholar and graduate of New York University where she trained in theater, music and performance studies at Tisch School of the Arts under noted Theatre Scholar Karen Malpede. She holds degrees in Liberal Studies, Music & Performing Arts and Science (Education), and is presently an Adjunct Professor at the New World School of the Arts/Miami Dade College. In her workshop, AFRO Diaries, she will present excerpts from her work. Participants will then dialogue and collaborate on art ideas spawned from these readings. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Miami, Teo Castellanos is an actor/writer/director who works in theater, film and television. Teo received his BFA in Theatre from Florida Atlantic University under a full scholarship where he studied with four time Tony Award winner Zoe Caldwell. He is author of War, Revolution, and the Projects, a one man trilogy, which he has toured on the East coast, as well as his one-man show NE 2nd Avenue, based on Miami characters, which was commissioned and produced by Miami Light Project and went on to a highly successful ten-week run at Coconut Grove. Teo is the founder and Artistic Director of D-Projects, an urban arts collective whose original theater work examines and dissects social ills through performance. He serves as the coach of Tigertail’s WordSpeak program. In Teo’s workshop, Breaking the Spoken Word Mold, participants will examine the currently accepted “formula” that the spoken word genre has developed over the last two decades. They will discuss ways to expand their horizons and topics in order to break the status quo and deepen understanding. Rudi Goblen is a writer, dancer and actor. He is an acclaimed “B-Boy”, whose crew Flipside Kings has toured internationally. He has toured with Teo Castellanos’D-Projects in Scratch & Burn and FAT BOY, and has trained and worked with DV8 Physical Theater, Cirque De Soleil, and is a founding member of Octavio Campos’ Camposition Hybrid Theater Works, Rosie Herrera’s Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre, and interactive performance troupe Circ-X. Rudi currently teaches and tours nationally and internationally with his three one-man shows, Insanity Isn’t, Fair Welling, and PET – all of which were originally commissioned and presented by Miami Light Project. His workshop, B-Boy, Beatbox and Poetry, will begin with some movement, then some vocal/beat-boxing warmups. Participants will recite some of their own poetry or others’ and receive help with their articulation. Whether she's hosting a spoken word event, music festival, or playing the role of a santera or a vixen, Deborah Magdalena inserts reality into every emotion. This performance artists and founder of Spoken Soul Festival has acquired impressive TV & film credits for the past 20 years. A published spoken word artist, Deborah is currently producing her first spoken word musical FUNKdalena – The Goddess of FUNK! Inspired by theological experiences, love addiction, redemption from an emotional suicide, 70’s, funk and Latin soul music. Her workshop, Think on Your Feet, will enhance participants’ improvisational skills. Using fun poetic exercises, they will be aided to relax and think on their feet. Such improvisational skills help performers if they should forget their lines – or someone else does. |
